THE BRIEF : ON NOVEMBER 8, 2013, TYPHOON HAIYAN HIT THE SEASIDE CITY OF TACLOBAN IN THE PHILIPPINES WITH A FORCE THAT'S CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE STRONGEST IN RECODED HISTORY. THE STORM OBLITERATED HOMES, FORCING SURVIVORS TO LIVE IN MAKESHIFT EVACUATION CENTERS. HERE, RESIDENTS LIVED IN THE DARK. THE CITY’S POWER LINES WERE CUT OFF, AS WELL AS SUPPLIES OF KEROSENE AND BATTERIES FOR LAMPS SINCE ROADS WERE ALSO DESTROYED. FOR SEVERAL DAYS, TACLOBAN CITY WAS IN COMPLETE DARKNESS AND ISOLATION. THERE WAS AN IMMEDIATE NEED TO GET ITS PEOPLE BACK ON THEIR FEET.
THE SOLUTION : PEPSI HAD TO QUICKLY HELP WITH THE ONE THING IT CAN GIVE THE MOST – HOPE. AND THAT’S’ PEPSI NIGHT LIGHT. THROUGH THE RELIABLE "PEPSI BOTTLE LIGHT" PLATFORM THAT’S BEEN DEPLOYED IN SEVERAL PLACES IN THE PHILIPPINES AND OTHER COUNTRIES SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2011, PEPSI TOGETHER WITH MY SHELTER FOUNDATION WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY CREATE AND DISTRIBUTE NEWLY DESIGNED PLASTIC PEPSI BOTTLE LAMPS -- NOW SOLAR BATTERY-POWERED AND CAN BE USED AT NIGHT. THE ACCOMPANYING DONATION DRIVE, ALSO LED BY PEPSI, ENSURED THAT THE NIGHT LIGHTS GET TO BE CONTINUOUSLY PRODUCED AND BROUGHT TO AREAS WHERE THEY’RE NEEDED THE MOST.
THE RESULTS : PEPSI BECAME THE FIRST BRAND TO IMMEDIATELY BRING LIGHTS TO DISASTER-STRICKEN TACLOBAN, THANKS TO THE PEPSI BOTTLE LIGHT PLATFORM THAT’S BEEN IN PLACE IN THE PHILIPPINES. A TOTAL OF 900 NIGHT LIGHT WERE QUICKLY DISTRIBUTED AND INSTALLED IN THE CITY DURING THE FIRST WAVE OF IMPLEMENTATION ALONE. OVER 890 INDIVIDUALS AND PARTNERS PARTICIPATED IN THE INITIAL DONATION DRIVE. IT MAY TAKE MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS TO 100% RESTORE ELECTRICITY IN TACLOBAN. SO AS OF PRESS TIME, ANOTHER WAVE OF PEPSI-LED DONATION, PRODUCTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NIGH LIGHT IS ALREADY IN PLACE TO CONTINUE THE REHABILITATION OF TYPHOON HAIYAN SURVIVORS.
