Synopsis:
BBC4 needed a set of idents to signpost their Friday Night Music programming. These were shot with macro lenses to give music lovers and audiophiles a closer look at the vinyl cutting process.
We created a collection of musical, rhythmic pieces that allow the viewer to experience the journey that a mastered mix takes onto analog tape and cut onto dub plate.
Location recordings of the vintage Studer tape machine and Neumann mastering lathe were manipulated and built upon with layer upon layer of sound design using only analog sources and synths. These sounds were created to emphasise the motion and hypnotic rhythm of tape and vinyl. Tape saturation and harmonic distortion were used to enhance the wonderful colouration and imperfections that give these vinyl such character. The mixes were then taken back to the cutting room, printed to tape on the Studer and cut to lacquer on the Neumann lathe to impart.
