Creative Execution:
When a hurricane approaches, this service, connected to the National Weather Service, sends a series of messages to the users near the coastlines, 5 messages before impact and 5 after.
Now millions of people from vulnerable communities know exactly what to do and more importantly, when to do it, so they now have a chance to overcome disasters successfully.
On September 2013, two strong hurricanes hit the coasts of Mexico causing unprecedented destruction and leaving thousands of victims.
Knowing what to do could make the difference between life and death, especially for people living by the coast in poor vulnerable communities. Most of them have a basic level of literacy and only have access to analog cellphones without Internet connection.
The Mexican Red Cross partnered with Mexico’s largest telecommunications company to create “Messages from the hurricane”.
A free SMS service that delivers step-by-step instructions in case of hurricane. The messages are designed to provide simple, easy-to-understand, visual instructions that can be viewed in the most basic cellphones.
