Brief Explanation

Cornelia Funke is an internationally acclaimed author of more than 20 young adult fantasy and adventure books.



To accompany the release of her latest novel, Fearless, Funke tapped into a new dimension to bring her fairytale-inspired worlds to life - through an iPad app.



The app, titled Mirrorworld, is a “Living Storybook,” a dynamic narrative experience and more than just an illustrated e-book.



Readers can navigate through 15 short stories and explore the vignettes at their own pace. There is also the option to experience the tales in visual/interactive form, read them as illustrated ebooks, or listen to them with audio narration.



Audiences can immerse themselves in Funke’s otherworldly settings – access alternate realities with the touch of their fingers, traverse rolling story scapes via scrolling, explore environments with gyroscope-rooted POVs, and study her fantastical, intricately rendered creatures, and breathtaking animated illustrations.

It is the first time the exquisite aesthetic and textural details and beings from Funke’s books have been manifested and portrayed exactly as the author envisioned them.



All concept, design, narrative development, art and programming was done in-house at the studio. A variety of methods were used including live-action, 2D/3D, moving illustrations, sculpture, and custom fabric art.



The studio’s artists and storytellers worked one-on-one with Cornelia over the past year to develop over 110 minutes of original content for audiences to explore and interact with.



The MirrorWorld app launched April 2013, coinciding with the release of Funke’s newest novel, Fearless.

The App can be purchased in the iTunes Store and will soon be available on the Kindle. It has been featured in Fast Company, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and USA Today – "MirrorWorld represents the new face of storytelling – and a new model for book publishing."
