Entry Summary
More than almost any other technological advance in recent times, the introduction of technology in public bathrooms has made the user experience worse than ever before. Not only are these hi-tech innovations unreliable but features like auto-flush, auto-sinks, and various hand-dryer designs have been shown, in some instances, to waste resources and be less hygienic than the old standard.
Brief Explanation
It’s June 1992. We hear a group people in an office having a brainstorm session at 3 PM — the hungriest time of the day. They end up talking themselves into a historically bad idea that will end up forever changing the way airport bathrooms function — giving birth to the maddeningly automated and often malfunctioning airport bathrooms we live with today. The VO from Snickers at the end reminds people not to brainstorm hungry.

VO: Snickers presents “3 PM Brainstorms.” World-changing ideas, unfortunately conceived during the hungriest time of day — like this one from June 1992.
WE HEAR A BRAINSTORM FROM THE RECENT PAST:
JAMES: I think we should re-do all airport bathrooms.
CHRIS: Hmm.
DEB: Um, okay.
JAMES: Let’s start by replacing toilet flushers with laser sensors… can we get those?
DEB: Well, flushers have worked fine for 100 years but lasers sound fun. What if they don’t work?
JAMES: How ‘bout we add a tiny button for manual flushing that’s impossible to find?
CHRIS: Oh, you know what? We could startle people with sudden random flushes.
JAMES: There you go.
DEB: Let’s do both! What else?
JAMES: Replace all the paper towels with fans.
CHRIS: Smart, that’ll save energy.
JAMES: No, because I think they should run 10 minutes longer than necessary, and have the heat and force of a jet engine.
CHRIS: Fun. Love jets. What about sinks?
DEB: Let’s give them non-functioning sensors.
CHRIS: Non-functioning? But then they can’t wash their hands…
DEB: Right. Then they won’t waste our hot air drying their hands, they’ll just leave.
JAMES: I love it! Change every airport bathroom on earth!
VO: Don’t brainstorm hungry — A reminder from your friends at Snickers.
