English Description

To warn against the hazards of deep sea oil drilling, the images in this commercial were created with actual dead birds killed in the Rena oil spill.

Their oil-soaked bodies were laid on paper to make oil prints of their silhouettes.

As the commercial plays, we become aware of the sheer number of these images.

We pause for a moment on one silhouette. Then, as a set of gloved hands enters frame we realise the black figure is an actual dead bird's body. A native blue penguin, covered completely in the oil from the Rena disaster. The hands carefully lift the lifeless body revealing a silhouette like we'd seen throughout the commercial.

We zoom out revealing many hundreds more, side by side. Representative of the increased number of wildlife at risk, if deep sea oil drilling were to continue.

Graphic: Over 20,000 birds were killed by the 'Rena' oil spill.

Graphic: Deep sea oil drilling could be 1000 times worse.
