Synopsis:
Decisive camera direction, dynamic editing, blending stunt work with VFX—all of that against a backdrop of Shirley Temple’s Oh My Goodness. All these allow the end product to elude the typical, well-worn tropes of the car commercial genre. Platige Image and Alessandro Pacciani present the director’s cut of their latest effort for Jaguar.

With their 90-second-long joint effort for Jaguar Alessandro Pacciani and Platige Image have set the bar incredibly high. The blend of the acclaimed director’s visually stunning imagery shot in natural lighting and Platige Image’s photo-realistic renderings of digital visual effects resulted in a film that eludes all of the typical and well-worn tropes of the car commercial genre. Picture-perfect night time footage, shot on the streets of an Asian metropolis, required the crew to use a couple of different camera set ups, each one with a different sensitivity, resolution, and noise characteristics. This allowed the team to capture the shifting nature and spectrum of light, as well as the lively spirit of the city at night—the latter serving as a backdrop for a tense car chase playing out on incessantly crowded multi-lane freeways as well as in cramped alleyways of local markets.

Sound design, as usual, was handled by Source Sound, Inc., one of the most renowned sound studios for car-related projects in Hollywood. The Platige Image team was responsible for post-production and complex VFX work. The director’s cut of the Jaguar commercial is another project for the automotive industry that the Polish studio has developed in collaboration with Alessandro Pacciani.

Alessandro Pacciani never slows down. New spot for Jaguar created with the help from Platige Image is the latest addition to his portfolio. The bar, as always, has been set very high and the final effect is yet another confirmation of Alessandro’s talent. Camera work, editing and the combination of stunt scenes and CG elements in multiple VFX shots drag you into an immersive experience of an urban car chase. All that in the accompaniment of an uforgettable classic song ‘’Oh My Goodness’’ performed by Shirley Temple makes this project break out of all conventions of car industry communication.

Night shoot of that scale on the streets of Asian metropolis creates much more than just logisctic problems. It makes it impossible to build consistent lighting scene throughout the spot. In addition, having used multiple camera rigs with different characteristics on the multiple locations with mostly natural lighting brought an unusual challenge to VFX and postproduction team. We had to perfectly recreate multiple lighting conditions during rendering and match them with various kinds of optics, motion blur and grain during final stages of compositing when the live action plates and CG elements were combined into one seamless projection. Not to mention removing outrageous amounts of noise in all the shadow areas. The sound mix and effects were again done at Source Sound Inc – the most sought after place for high end car sound effects in Hollywood.
