Leaps by Bayer, a bold new initiative for breakthrough innovations in the life sciences, launches this week via TLGG GmBH, with a 90-second intro film starring pro skaters Aaron 'Jaws' Homoki and Ali Boulala, and featuring a voiceover from skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Berlin-based musician Paul Kalkbrenner produced the exclusive background track. The film was shot in the largest salt flat in the world, Bolivia's spectacular Salar de Uyuni. Entry Summary
Instead of using models or actors, the film uses the two actual skateboarders famous for the original Lyon25 story: Aaron „Jaws“ Homoki and Ali Boulala. The voice-over is from skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Berlin-based techno-icon Paul Kalkbrenner produced the exclusive background track called Schlœribus.
Effectiveness
A more natural or motivated approach to lighting meant it was extremely important to scout or plan the shoot accordingly. And the remote location also meant, that we couldn’t have the normal infrastructure of a commercial shoot you would expect in a big city. We chose a handheld feel with anamorphic lenses to capture the performance of these two.
Brief Explanation
In 90 seconds, the film revives the epic story of the “Lyon 25”, a staircase in Lyon, France, 25 steps high, that pro Skateboarder Ali Boulala tried to leap in 2002. And failed. His attempt inspired 13-year-old skateboarder Aaron “Jaws” Homoki. Over a decade later, in June 2014, during his initial attempt, Jaws snapped his board and tore his MCL. Then, in October 2015, after a long and painful recovery, he did what many thought was impossible: he finally landed it, 13 years later.
The film ends with the question what a similar Leap of faith would look like in science. This is the question that Leaps by Bayer intends to answer.
