Describe the campaign/entry:
As Sentul is a formerly bustling but currently forgotten part of Kuala Lumpur, Buka Pintu (meaning “open doors” in Malay) was a way for us to open up Sentul’s timeworn exterior and uncover the vibrant stories that lay behind it.
We did so by using the patterns on gates, windows, and doors of homes around Sentul that have been there for generations – and the stories of the people who have lived there for generations.
Creative Execution:
We explored Sentul, taking note of the various patterns we saw on the gates, windows and doors of older homes there. We also talked to the people who lived in those homes, to learn what they had to say about how Sentul has changed over time.
We then recreated beautiful designs from the patterns, representing the stories of the people behind them.
Everything was posted on projectsentul.com for people to read and print out. People were encouraged to come and visit Sentul – perhaps they could begin by visiting the Project B café, where they could buy physical versions of the artwork on the Project Sentul website.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market:
- All the physical artwork sold out.
- Proceeds went to the Dignity for Children Foundation, a charity that provides educational opportunities for underprivileged children in Sentul.
- We breathed new life into the old and unearthed Sentul’s treasures.
We raised interest in Sentul digitally to encourage visiting the place in person.
We turned the stories and patterns we found into digital content for people to read and print out on projectsentul.com, at the same time inviting them to come and see Sentul for themselves.
